President Ray Fast welcomed everyone to the first meeting of the new season, he said that over the summer we have had 13 new members join the club and he welcomed the five who were here today. Ray then introduced Activities Director Dawn Moore. Dawn gave out the ‘Coordinator’ hangers to those who had not been at the June meeting: Carol Scott – wine & appies; Dawn Moore & Gil Moore – hiking; Liz McCulloch – Bridge, and Lindsay Sparkes – Financial
Also to 5 new coordinators: Ed Williams & Gerry Haist – Birding; Edie & Murray Lindman – Lunch Bunch, and Gary Lucas - Cycling
Dawn thanked Sherry Long for having led the Cycling group for the last two years. Dawn thanked all the Coordinators and helpers who had manned the activity tables during the afternoon and said if people still wanted to sign up after the meeting they could and they could also sign up online.
Ray asked Vice President Katie Hubberstey to introduce this month’s speaker. Katie welcomed and introduced Alanna Gowdy from Comox Valley Elder College. Alanna explained the background and ethos of the College saying it was an entertaining way of learning. She said this semester there were 60+ courses available and the Saturday morning Lecture Series which this semester is “First Nation’s Art”. Alanna handed around bookmarks giving the pertinent details of Elder College and said the newsletter was widely available in the Valley. The Information session for next semester is Saturday 19th September and enrolment is then on Monday 21st September. Alanna said they were always looking for volunteers to help with the college and invited anyone interested to contact her.
Katie thanked Alanna for her presentation and gave her a token of our appreciation.
Ray then introduced Vicki Matthews who spoke about the Glacier Probus Facebook page that she was keeping up to date and said it was another way of keeping members informed of all that the club was doing.
Ray then drew for the door prizes which this month were donated by Sally Giblak and Jeannie Hall and won by Marlene Horvath and Moira Williams. Ray reminded everyone that the tickets for the Christmas party were on sale at the meetings and could also be booked online.
Ray thanked everyone for coming and wished then a safe journey home.
