A very pleasant way to celebrate the start of a new month is to go on a bird outing and that is just what some of our group did on Wednesday. Our destination was a favourite - the area surrounding the Little River Ferry terminal, starting and ending at the Little River Nature Park on Wilkinson Rd. Our loop took us through a nice variety of landscapes, increasing the chances of sighting different bird species. We had a slow start to our birding list, with few to be seen (though a number were heard). Still, by the time we returned to our trailhead, we had a list of 26 species, these being:
Red-winged Blackbirds, Brewer's Blackbirds, Spotted Towhees, Red-breasted Sapsucker, European Starlings, American Robins, Northwestern Crows, Common Raven, Hairy Woodpecker family, Yellow Warbler, Orange-crowned Warbler, White-crowned Sparrows, Song Sparrows, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Finches, Violet-green Swallows, Barn Swallows, Purple Martins, Hummingbird, Bald Eagle, gulls, Double-crested Cormorants, Great Blue Herons, Mallards and Killdeer. We were especially happy to be treated to the sight of the Hairy Woodpecker adults making repeated visits to their nesthole with treats for their nestling.
Added to the list were sightings of Mink and Sea Lions and areas of wild flowers, including Larkspur. Sure was nice to be out there enjoying it all!
Thanks to Ian, Bill and Dawn for their photos.
