Another hot day for Vancouver Island: it was decided to forego mountain walks under these conditions and to make a VERY early start to the outing we did do. At 07:30a.m., the day's hikers were to be found at the Superstore parking lot, ready to head north to Campbell River's Elk Falls/Millennium/Canyon View trail system. Three more hikers joined us at the trailhead and then we divided into two groups - the 'fast' group and the 'slow' group. The 'fast' hikers started off on the Canyon View loop in the longer, counter-clockwise direction while the 'slower group (composed of 3 members) headed off clockwise. Ever heard of the hare and the tortoise? We three 'slower' hikers finished our lunch at the far end and were on our way back before we met up with the 'faster' group coming in the opposite direction! And, we were back at the trailhead well ahead of the alternate group. Hah - guess they thought they could lallygag along the way. Both groups had a good time on the trail and we had an enjoyable time talking it all through over drinks at the Riptide Pub. Sadly, the Royal Coachman Pub is now closed.
