The Miseducation of Cameron Post This movie was a provocative treatise on what happens to a child living in a fundamentalist Christian town, being raised by these values, when the child discovers in her adolescence, that she is gay. More to the point, it tells what happens to the girl when it is discovered that she is gay in a rather public way. Her family sends her away to a camp where the councillors attempt to deprogram her. The bulk of the movie is set at the camp and shows the main character, Cameron, and her fellow "inmates" and how they try to bring the kids around to a heterosexual way of life. The movie handled a very sensitive topic by confronting it head on and making no bones about the point of view of the piece. There were really fine performances by all the young actors. The movie is an award winner of the Grand Jury Prize for dramatic feature at Sundance. At dinner at Joe Klassen's there was a lot of conversation about the heartlessness of some people who profess Christianity. Those conversation branched into other discussions of a controversial nature. Yes, we can discuss these topics in a respectful way. I'm proud of our group's tolerance and sensitivity. |
