Glacier Probus Club
Monthly Gathering
4th April 2019
President Tony Nicol welcomed everyone to the April Monthly Gathering and thanked them for coming. He said there was again a large number of new members.
Tony lightened the mood by telling a story of when he had his gallbladder removed when it was still a more major surgery.
Tony then went on to welcome new members: Don & Birdena Luney, Mary Sullivan, Dave Adshead, Marcia & Gerry Allardice, David & Lael Popham, Lawrence Stearn, Leslie Fraser, Dave Hone, Carol Baert, Colleen Connolly, Ken & Joan McDonald, Teresa Costco, Bruce Hart, Mary Finnan, Bernice Morrison, Gail Sykes. Also guest: Erin Wolter,
He then spoke of the annual Special Events “PRISMA Cruise” which Michele Morton was once again organizing. He said Michele still had 10 tickets available for members and/or friends. He said all the information was available on the Club’s website under the Special Event button.
Since this coming week is Volunteers month Tony said 2 of our members had agreed to talk of their own volunteer experience. Anne Fast spoke of volunteering with the Anderton Therapeutic Gardens and Sandy Dreger spoke of her work with the Auxiliary for Comox Valley Health Care, in particular the hospital gift shop. Tony thanked both the speakers and the handed over to Vice President Nancy Shaver-LeForte who introduced this month’s speaker our own Probus club member Alan Brown. While earning a Bachelor of Applied Arts at Ryerson University in the 1970s, Alan discovered that he didn't really like beer. That changed in 1985 when he tasted his first craft beer. The heavens opened up, the glory shone down, the Choir Celestial sang, and Alan fell to the ground crying tears of joy. Although he continued to work for many years in communications and administration, he always thought about a career in the craft brewing industry, and eventually returned to school to earn a diploma in Brewing Sciences. He worked at Black Oak Brewing in Toronto before joining the staff of Niagara College's Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management program. In 2014, Alan won the Master Brewers Association of Canada "Iron Brewer" competition. Alan retired in 2016 and moved to Comox with his wife Elaine. He writes about the craft brewing industry on his blog, "Student of Beer", and teaches classes about beer at Elder College. Alan went on to give a most informative and entertaining presentation on the history of brewing and the development of Craft Brewing as it is in Canada, particularly BC today.
Tony then invited Nancy Watkins to come up and do the monthly draw. The winners were David Popham and Sandy Dreger.
Tony thanked everyone for coming and said he hoped to see such a large gathering again in May.
