Glacier Probus Club
Monthly Gathering
3rd January 2019
President Tony Nicol welcomed everyone to the first Monthly Gathering of 2019 and thanked them for coming despite the rain, he wished everyone a healthy and happy new Year.
Tony said that Heather, the Activities Director had asked him to announce that this was the last call for members to sign up for the Dining In Group. He said if no more members joined in the next few weeks the group would be put on ice until there was more interest shown.
Tony went on to welcome two new members Cathy West and Rod Rawlins. He wished Bernie Leforte a happy 26th birthday amid much laughter.
Tony said that over the last year or so they had tried, so far unsuccessfully to involve more members in the Monthly Gatherings. He said they were now going to try a question and answer period after the main business of the meeting was over.
Tony then asked Vice President Nancy Shaver-LeForte to introduce this month’s speaker. Nancy explained that this month’s speaker was Christine Fordham, a long time resident of the Comox Valley, who two years ago signed on with MARS as a volunteer caregiver for injured birds. She trained to be a bird handler and now regularly shares MARS Wildlife Rescue Ambassador Birds with school children and interested community groups. Her talk was titled, “Meeting a MARS Ambassador Owl”.
The members were asked not to clap before or after the presentation so as not frighten Shakespeare the Owl.
Christine gave a very interesting and informative presentation talking about Shakespeare the Owl and the work of MARS. After her presentation she answered many questions from the members and also said that Nancy had forms and information if anyone was interested in volunteering with MARS. Nancy thanked Christine and gave her a token of appreciation from the Club.
Tony asked Nancy Watkins to come up and do this month’s draw. The winners were Steve Horn and Barbara Sabey.
Tony then opened the meeting up to questions and answers of which there were a number. He then thanked everyone and said he looked forward to seeing everyone in February.
