BACKGROUND
Tai Chi Chuan (also written as Taijiquan) is an ancient Chinese form of exercise originally created as a fighting art.
Today it is recognized that this is much more than a martial art. Research is showing how TaiChi improves balance and cognition in the aging population, it has a meditative and relaxing effect and appears to have health benefits as well. Research on fibromyalgia and Parkinson’s has resulted in physicians recommending tai chi to their patients.
For those who just see it as a slow moving form look again. What you can't see is how internal it is. You learn to move and connect your entire body as a single unit in space and the movements require concentration and focus. It is a slow learning process and although it seems that mastering the form is the goal it can be far more than that.
