What better way to end the year than with an outing to enjoy the birds and lovely scenery under a sunny sky: on the 30th, a number of birders headed to the Ship's Point area to see what bird species they could detect on water, shoreline and land. All in all, the consensus was that we did pretty well, with a total of 18 species: Horned Grebe, Hooded Merganser, Common Mergansers, Mallards, Song Sparrow, Dark-eyed Juncos, Chestnut-backed Chickadees, gulls, Black Oystercatchers, Common Loon, Common Goldeneyes, Buffleheads, Surf Scoters, Scaups, Northern Flicker, Belted Kingfisher, American Wigeons and (highlight of the day) Black Turnstones.
