Sunday afternoon, some of the Club Birders headed to Royston's Marine Drive and Hilton Rd (with its offshore boat hulks and Seaside Trail) to see what birds were about. The tide was out a bit further than expected so sadly, most seabirds were at a distance, but we kept at it and accumulated a satisfactory bird total by the end of our two hour's outing. It was interesting to see what we could identify offshore with the aid of binoculars but then, checking over photos on the computer, another 6 species were identified among flocks sighted in the distance. Added to these were the shorebirds and songbirds, bringing the total to 24: Song Sparrows, Lincoln Sparrows, Spotted Towhees, Dark-eyed Juncos, Bald Eagle, Kingfisher, Great Blue Herons, Kildeer, Black-bellied Plovers, Black Turnstones, Dunlins, Glaucous-winged Gulls, Mallards, American Wigeons, Northern Pintails, Common Goldeneyes, Common Loon, Buffleheads, Red-necked Grebe, Red-breasted Merganser, Surf Scoters, White-winged Scoters, Black Scoters and Scaups.
