An 08:00 a.m. gathering - now THIS is an group that means business! Since the "early bird catches the worm", five Birders dragged themselves out of bed to head over to the Coal Creek trail by Jumbo's Cabin (enroute to Comox Lake from Cumberland) in order to check out the birdlife along the trail. We were rewarded with a nice selection of songbirds and also a Wood Duck male that was meandering among the grasses and lilypads in the marsh. It was a gorgeous morning that highlit the views of nature surrounding us. The outing ended with a quick visit to the Cumberland sewage lagoon, where we sighted a variety of ducks on the water and a few other birds around the lagoon edge.
In all, our bird list at the creek trail included: Spotted Towhee, American Robin, crows, Red-winged Blackbirds, Song Sparrows, Black-throated Gray Warbler, Yellow-throated Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Bushtit, Red-breasted Sapsucker, Dark-eyed Juncos, Black-headed Grosbeak, Turkey Vulture, Wood Duck male, Mallards and...the sound of a rooster in the background. At the sewage lagoon, we added two Mallard families (and a number of other Mallards), a pair of (Lesser?) Scaups, a Killdeer, a Spotted Towhee and a Sparrow family to our bird list.
