The Birding Group had their first outing of the '22-23 Season today under ideal conditions - warm with flat-calm waters under cloudy skies. We spent two hours wandering around the Airpark loop trail, checking shoreline, lagoon, skies and vegetation for any sign of birds. Exclamations and discussion followed each sighting as we enjoyed nature outdoors. We are entering the migratory season but not all the winter residents have arrived yet, while many summer birds have departed and as a result, numbers were not as good as we would have liked. Still, nineteen species kept us occupied as we made our way around the loop: Belted Kingfisher, Barn Swallows, gulls (including the Ring-billed Gull), Northwestern Crows, Red-winged Blackbirds, European Starlings, Eurasian Collared-Dove, White-crowned Sparrow, Turkey Vultures, Bald Eagles, Mallards, Domestic Duck, Lesser Yellowlegs, Western Sandpipers, Canada Geese, Killdeer, Great Blue Heron, Northern Pintails and Green-winged Teals.
