For a different hike, the group participants headed over to Quadra Island on Saturday, June 23rd for a meander over to Maud Island. This island is adjacent to Quadra and is connected by a rock causeway. Back in the 50's, the causeway was built to provide a roadway over to the Maud Island so that equipment could be brought over to tunnel from Maud over to and under Ripple Rock (situated underwater in Seymour Narrows), stash explosives and blow the rock to smithereens (check out footage of the explosion for details).
Our route was 10 km long, taking us 4 hours for the hike and lunch break. The weather was perfect with a slight coolness to the air within the woods and lots of sunshine, so the day was judged a success. A highlight was enjoying our lunch on the Maud Island bluff that provided a view up to our Ripple Rock viewpoint - there were at least 9 hikers over there who were probably envying us our vantage point!
Thank you, Bill J. for your links to the day's ROUTE and to your great PHOTOS of the day.
