With sunshine and clear blue skies the hiking group choose to explore Lake Helen Mackenzie and Battleship Lake. Given that Mount Washington opened a ski run the prior weekend for Father’s Day there was a high probability that snow would be on the trails and we were not disappointed. Out came the micro-spikes and hiking poles as we continued our way up to Battleship Lake, which was mostly covered with snow and ice, before stopping at Lake Helen Mackenzie for lunch. During our stop we were treated to a flyover by what looked and sounded like 5 fighter jets along with the beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and the melting lake ice. While there was some talk of swimming no one was brave enough to try the icy water.
