In celebration of the first of May - and of a lovely, sunny spring day - a number of hikers drove down to Nanaimo to check out the Newcastle Island trails once more. This is a favourite outing for the group and is especially appreciated on a day such as this one. Nature was front and centre with lots of interesting sights; we had plenty of stops to enjoy it all. As usual, lunch was at the Giovando Lookout over the entry into Departure Bay, where chances of seeing ferries coming and going are good. Another favourite site to stop at was the sandstone quarry on the west side of the island - great for group shots (check Bill's photos). Our debrief was held at the Occidental Hotel in Nanaimo.
