Two hikes were on offer on Quadra Island on Sunday. One hike was advertised as a loop of about 5 kilometers with climbs up to the North and South peaks of Chinese Mountains. Before noon we had climbed both peaks and had less than 2 kilometers left to hike back down to the cars. Everyone was keen to add to our adventure, so we climbed to the summit of Beech's Mountain. Our reward was the best views of the day, looking down at the North and South peaks.

The second group hiked a loop which included Morte Lake, Mud Lake and the overgrown Reed Lake before crossing Walcan Rd (which had brought us to the trailhead) and returning to the cars via a path on the other side. The route didn’t involve as much of the prolonged ascents/descents as with the Chinese Peaks outing, but we got our share of ups and downs over the undulating terrain and got fine views of Morte Lake from the top of a bluffs area. The forest landscape was quite varied and all agreed that the route was worth return visits for its good workout potential under enjoyable and scenic conditions.
Our debrief was on the lawn of the Herriott Bay Inn with a lovely view over the marina as a backdrop; to cap off the outing, we enjoyed ice cream cones while waiting for our return ferry. Can’t do much better than that!
