With the Group Leader out of town, Steve Ray stepped in and kept our gang on track. They saw three movies. "If Beale Street Could Talk" was on March 10. This movie was nominated for Academy Awards and won a Best Supporting Actress award for Regina King. The movie was director Barry Jenkins’ ambitious follow-up to his Oscar-winning Film Circuit favourite Moonlight adapts James Baldwin’s poignant novel about a woman fighting to free her falsely accused husband from prison before the birth of their child.
On March 24 the group saw "Capernum" which held some of the most indelible depictions of Lebanese life in contemporary cinema. At once gritty and perceptive, Labaki’s latest film is her finest yet, a dive into Beirut’s lower depths as viewed through the eyes of an imperilled child.
On March 31, the much awaited "You are Here: A Come From Away Story" was presented. This is the amazing story of what Canadians in Gander and Appleton, Newfoundland did when many US planes were grounded after 9/11. This is a heartwarming story and close to the hearts of all Canadians.
The group communed with one another afterward at three different restaurants. I'm assured that March was indeed a great month for movies at the Rialto Cinemas.
