Steve Horn led a different route from what we would normally do. We followed one of the main logging roads for a bit which led to a nicely groomed trail left by some snow mobiles. We followed this trail until we reached the point where we had gained an elevation of 199 metres over a distance of about 3.4 km. We stopped here for a lunch/snack break, then retraced our route back to the vehicles. Partially down a steep decline, when Annette opened her pack to retrieve a set of crampons for one of our participants, her water bottle and a food container seized the opportunity to escape her backpack and go for a slide down the crusty hill. One of our members grabbed the water bottle, Cheryl, fancying herself Roberto Luongo, made an impressive dive to save the food container. Well done!! Unfortunately, there was not a record of this athletic save. Meanwhile, her water bottle slid out of her pack and ran the course of the downhill track until it got caught up in a thicket of trees where Bill Jorgensen gallantly retrieved it.
Just a couple of facts about this excursion: 6.77 kms with 199 metre elevation gain, a moving time of 1 hour 54 minutes for a total of 2:56 hours. Not bad for a steady relaxed pace!
