As a variation on our routine Tuesday walks, this week we took off to Newcastle Island, just a short ferry ride from Nanaimo Harbour. In the 1930 it was set up as a pleasure resort by the Canadian Pacific Steam ship company who built a pavilion, picnic areas, soccer field and wading pool. Up to the Second World War this was a favourite place for townspeople to go and relax. After the war it was less popular, and in 1961 was designated as a BC Park.
Our group of 15 all managed to arrive in good time for the ferry and walked one of a number of trails round the southern end of the island. We posed for photos at the sandstone quarry, before breaking into two groups for lunch, and returning for the ferry at 2pm.
An enjoyable walk in fine weather, good company and a pleasant change from our local walks.
Thanks to Tricia for organizing, and to Bill for his photos.
