Monthly Gathering
February 2017
February 2017
President Katie Hubberstey welcomed everyone to the February Gathering.
Announcements:
Following the announcements, Katie introduced Loys Maignon, February's Speaker and a Past President of Comox Valley Nature. Loys gave an interesting talk regarding the 50-year-old Club, which emphasizes the collection of data for National programs, incorporating the technical expertise of its various members. The Club offers public lectures and weekly walks and includes Birding, Botany and Young Naturalist Groups. They are involved in Garry Oak and Wetland restoration and in invasive species control and you will find them doing Swan, Fall migration, Christmas and Spring bird counts (which are passed on to the appropriate government agencies). Added to this, they get involved in park advocacy and environmental and heritage issues. Four key publications on Nature subjects have been put out by the Club over the past years, including a checklist of Comox Valley birds. Loys went on to describe the provincial and federal identification of the Club which, for example, was one of the five founding members of the Federation of BC Naturalists, started in 1969. He then touched on the types of involvements and issues embraced by his Club, examples being threatened or endangered exosystems, Garry Oaks in the Valley and the accumulation of methyl mercury in the Estuary.
Loys' lecture was well received and a number of thoughtful questions came from the floor at the end of his talk.
Katie thanked Loys for his presentation and gave him a donation for CV Nature as a thank you from Glacier PROBUS.
The Activity Group Director, Dawn Moore, called Bill Boham up to the front to present him with a Coordinators bar: Bill recently started up the Live Music Appreciation Group, taking on the role of Coordinator. At the same time, he became a Co-Coordinator of the Snowshoeing Group.
Ian Thompson, who is now a Co-Coordinator of the Photography Group, came up next, to profile the group. He is hopeful that the Photographers will be revitalized over the next months and will do all he can to make a go of it. New members are always welcome. This has the makings of an interesting group and members are encouraged to support Ian and Steve's efforts by turning out to planned outings and events.
Brian Liberman did the draw for door prizes, the winners of which were: Maris Ratel and Bill Jorgensen.
Katie thanked everyone for attending and hoped that they would have an enjoyable Valentine's Day.
Photographs below are compliments of Ian Thompson - thank you, Ian.

Announcements:
- Katie introduced two new members, Kathy Slater and Mary Mitchell, to the Club. Membership is now up to 185.
- A Meet and Greet for new members is being planned for March - stay tuned!
- Katie thanked the membership for responding to the Membership Survey which was sent out late last year. The results are now being reviewed and a report will be generated after the return of our 'guru', Keith Millard, from vacation.
- the next Special Event is Games Night, to be held on February 18th at 6pm, in the St George's Church Hall. Fourteen members have signed up to date; Michele Morton (Special Events Director) would like to see 24 gamers at the event, so do think about signing up for this one - it's never too late! (click on GAMES NIGHT and fill out the sign-up form). The Bowling Event was so much fun that it will be repeated in March... details to follow.
- A big 'Thank You' goes to the Comox Valley Photography Society for the loan of their big screen for today's Speaker presentation. Katie gave a short endorsement for this Club, informing us that it convenes at the Little Red Church in Comox each month. Its next big event of the year is ImageFest, which takes place on April 21st from 7-9pm at the Sid Williams Theatre. Here, you can view a selection of 3-4 minute multi-media slide shows produced by members, complete with music and themes. Information on this club can be found at CV PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY .
